These little islands are a "proof of concept" test of an innovative construction technique that deposits a heavy mud/sand slurry to maximize a created marsh edge and reduce material handling and shaping costs. Under the terms of the Chevron Old Gulf Refinery NRDA settlement, Chevron agreed to construct 85 acres of these marsh 'pimple mounds' at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Lower Neches River Wildlife Management Area (Sabine Estuary, Orange County, Texas).
