During Hurricane Katrina, Max Mayfield, Director of the National Hurricane Center, led outreach efforts to the public and emergency management communities. These efforts helped individuals, businesses, and communities prepare for the impending hurricane landfall. Mayfield retired as director of the National Hurricane Center on January 3, 2007 — after having served 34 years with NOAA.
