Ferdinand Hassler (shown here) responded to Gallatin’s request for plans to survey the coast. A committee of the American Philosophical Society selected his proposal from among twelve that were submitted. Hassler thus became the first superintendent of the United States Coast Survey and served until his death in 1843.
